What is the CBSE grading system for class 6 to 8?

The CBSE grading system is a way of evaluating students based on their performance across the academic year, instead of only one final exam.

Key Features

  • Focuses on learning, not rote memorization
  • Reduces exam pressure
  • Encourages regular study habits
  • Gives importance to both academics and skills

For classes 6, 7, and 8, CBSE mainly uses marks with grade bands, which means marks are converted into grades for easier understanding.

A student’s overall performance is assessed through scholastic (academic) and co-scholastic (non-academic) areas.

Scholastic Performance

For scholastic subjects, grades are given using an 8-point scale given below the table.

Co-scholastic Performance

Students will be evaluated in co-scholastic areas based on the following:

  • Work Education: Skill-based activities that encourage hands-on learning.
  • Art Education: Includes both visual and performing arts.
  • Health and Physical Education: Activities like sports, martial arts, and fitness.
  • Discipline: Focuses on attendance, sincerity, behavior, values, personal grooming, respect for rules, and attitude towards society, the nation, and others.

Co-scholastic areas will be graded using a 3-point scale

  3. Compartment Exam

    • To be promoted, students must score at least 33% in the compartment exam for the subject they failed.
    • The compartment exam syllabus will be the same as the final exam.
    • Students get only one chance to pass the compartment exam. No second attempt will be allowed under any circumstances, including medical issues.
